NEW YORK — After moving on from Aaron Rodgers last month, the Jets have found their next quarterback.

Justin Fields has agreed to a two-year deal with the Jets, according to a source. NFL Network reports Fields’ deal is for $40 million, including $30 million guaranteed.

The Jets and Fields agreed on terms after the legal tampering period began on Monday. He will be reunited with his college teammate, Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson, whom he played with for two seasons at Ohio State.

It was no secret the Jets had been targeting Fields in free agency since the Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey regime began in late January. Fields will replace Rodgers, who had an uneven time with the Jets.

Gang Green acquired Rodgers in 2023, hoping to contend for a Super Bowl. But his tenure never lived up to expectations after finishing with losing records each of the last two seasons. Rodgers also suffered an Achilles injury four plays into his Jets debut in 2023. When he returned the following season, Rodgers looked like a shell of the player who won four NFL MVP awards with the Packers.

In 17 games, Rodgers passed for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also had a QBR of 48, the 25th in the NFL.

After being drafted 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields played his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears. The Jets actually passed on Fields to select Zach Wilson in the same draft. After recording a 10-28 record with two different offensive coordinators in three seasons, Fields was traded to the Steelers last off-season to back up Russell Wilson.

In four seasons in the league, Fields has thrown for 7,780 yards, 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He also rushed for 2,509 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Fields started the first six games of last season after Wilson aggravated a calf injury he suffered during training camp. He was 4-2 in those starts and Fields scored 10 total touchdowns.

Despite his early success last season, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin decided to bench Fields and make Wilson the starter again. Wilson played well at first, and Pittsburgh went 6-1 in his first seven starts. But the Steelers’ offense and Wilson struggled after that, and the team ended the year on a five-game losing streak, including a wild-card playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Fields, 26, will likely be the Jets’ starting quarterback next season, with Tyrod Taylor as the team’s backup. Signing Fields also does not preclude the Jets from selecting a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Fields has not been a polished passer during his time in the NFL. However, the Jets can lean on his scrambling ability, which can also help the Jets’ rushing attack, which finished 31st (91.8 rushing yards per game) a season ago.

The Jets will hope Fields can be a reclamation player, much like Sam Darnold, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield have become when they each left the teams that originally drafted them. Fields will be the fifth different quarterback to start for them since 2020 — joining Rodgers, Wilson, Darnold and Joe Flacco.
