Yankees cut struggling Carlos Carrasco

NEW YORK — The Yankees brought an end to their Carlos Carrasco experiment on Tuesday — at least for the time being — as they designated the veteran for assignment before their game against the Padres.

Carrasco, 38 and in his 16th season, cracked the Yankees’ injury-ravaged rotation as non-roster invitee out of spring training, but the right-hander had a 5.91 ERA over eight games, six starts and 32 innings. Carrasco has also been one of baseball’s worst pitchers in terms of Stuff+, which measures the physical characteristics of a pitch, this season.

In explaining the decision, Boone said he felt his bullpen needed some coverage, as Yerry de los Santos took Carrasco’s place. Boone said cutting Carrasco was a “tough call” and something the team had thought about for a couple of days, but he didn’t rule out a return to the big league club.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the pitcher cleared waivers given his results and metrics this season.

“I’ve always admired him from across the diamond, and we got to see it up close,” Boone said of Carrasco, who has also pitched for Cleveland and the Mets. “What a phenomenal human being that Carlos is, and the class with which he carries himself, it really was a pleasure to be around him for these last couple of months. And who knows? He may be back here.”

Boone also said that long-man Ryan Yarbrough and Triple-A starter Allan Winans could factor into the Yankees’ rotation plans now that there’s an open spot, but the team will see how the next few days unfold.

Yarbrough has a 3.72 ERA over nine games, including one start. He filled in for the scratched Clarke Schmidt this past Saturday, holding the Rays to one earned run over four innings while throwing a season-high 64 pitches.

“Yarbrough obviously plays a role in some way, shape or form,” Boone said. “Could be length a certain day. Could be starting a day.”

Winans, meanwhile, has yet to allow an earned run and has struck out 24 batters over 14 innings at Triple-A. His season-high pitch count is 62.

“He’s been throwing the ball really well,” Boone said. “He’s very much in play for us, potentially here, in some kind of a role moving forward.”
