Anticipate sumptuous gowns and lavish jewelry in the upcoming ‘Maria’

Looking ahead to the holiday movie season, here’s one that should be a costume dream: “Maria,” Pablo Larraín’s drama about legendary opera singer Maria Callas, played by Angelina Jolie.
The film takes place during the late days of Callas’ life (she died in 1977), and should feature plenty of sumptuous gowns (like this one, with its dramatic sheer cape) and lavish jewelry. The costume designs are by Massimo Cantini Parrini, a two-time Oscar nominee (“Cyrano,” “Pinocchio”) with a flair for whimsical detail.
“Maria” will open in select theaters in late November, and begin streaming on Netflix Dec. 11.
