Do It Yourself or Not: Convert a can light to a pendant

Gene and Katie Hamilton, Tribune Content Agency on

You’ll be surprised what a difference it makes to switch from an ordinary recessed can light to a stylish hanging pendant fixture. If you want to add a pendant light, you can use a conversion kit designed for do-it-yourselfers to make the switch. It’s a small change but can change the look in counter lighting, over an island, or in a dining area. And you’ll find a stylish choice of designs ranging from traditional to contemporary. No tools needed to make the switch, but you’ll need a ladder.

At the manufacturer’s website you can see if your can light is compatible with the kit and download the instructions https://www.worthhp.com.

The conversion kit includes a recessed light adapter unit, lampshade, socket ring and spacer. You provide the light bulb. For safety’s sake, turn off the power to the switch at the main panel before you begin. Making the switch involves turning off the light switch, then removing the bulb and trim ring of the recessed fixture. At that point, check to make sure the fixture is properly secured in the ceiling. Adjust the cord to length by wrapping it around the spindle arm; then screw the adapter unit into the light bulb socket. Finger-loosen the cover plate compression nut and slide the plate up the cord and against the ceiling; then tighten the nut by hand.

You can buy the kit for under $100 and do it yourself, saving 64%, or hire a handyman to install the kit for $275.
