UK to unveil new Russia sanctions as European ministers meet

U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is set to unveil fresh sanctions targeting Russia as Britain hosts a security meeting of European ministers for the first time.
The sanctions will target “actors supporting Russia’s illegal invasion” of Ukraine, Britain’s Foreign Office said Monday in an emailed statement, without providing further details.
Lammy will announce them at a summit in London of countries from the so-called Weimar + group, including representatives from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Poland and the European Union. It’s the first time the U.K. has hosted such a gathering.
“We are facing a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our continent,” Lammy said in the statement. “The challenge we face today is not only about the future of Ukraine – it is existential for Europe as a whole.”
European nations are ramping up defense spending and cooperation amid heightened concerns that support from the U.S. for its traditional allies is weakening under President Donald Trump.
Britain and the European Union have been working to strengthen ties that had weakened after the U.K. left the bloc five years ago, and are optimistic about striking a deal on security and defense at a joint summit on May 19.
