SAN DIEGO — A driver died after he was pulled unconscious from a Toyota Prius that plunged off a cliff at La Jolla Cove into the ocean Tuesday evening, authorities said.
A witness called 911 just after 8:05 p.m. to report the crash off Coast Boulevard, San Diego police Officer Colin Steinbroner said.
Lifeguards pulled the 76-year-old driver from the fully submerged vehicle and brought him to the shore, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jose Ysea said. The driver was unconscious and unresponsive. Lifeguards initiated lifesaving measures, and he was taken to a nearby hospital, Ysea said.
No one else was found in the vehicle, which was hoisted out of the water Wednesday morning.
San Diego police said Wednesday that the driver later died. The department’s Traffic Division is investigating the crash, but no further information was available.
