DETROIT — Detroit police officials said Monday they have identified a suspect in the deaths of three people found in a burned vehicle this past weekend on the city's west side.

"The Detroit Police Department has taken one person of interest into custody as part of our investigation into the tragic discovery of three bodies found inside a burned vehicle on the city’s west side," Detroit Police Department spokesman Vic Pratt said in a statement.

The Homicide Task Force, which involves DPD and Michigan State Police, is finishing the process of making a positive identification and is working with the families of the victims, Pratt said. Police previously said the bodies were "burned beyond recognition."

The remains were found early Sunday after firefighters responded to a car blaze in an alley near 30th and Milford streets between Boxwood and Woodrow.

"The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also assisting with this," Pratt said. "At this stage, we believe this to be an isolated incident."

Authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for tips, which can be anonymous. Anyone with more information on the case is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department, Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or DetroitRewards.TV.
